Spotlight on Dave Goren: Fueling the Future of Sports Media
For anyone who has ever paid a visit to Flywheel, there is a very likely chance that you’ve struck up a conversation with Dave Goren. While he is certainly a friendly and familiar face around the office, he would also be recognized by most Winston natives who have tuned into WXII-TV where he spent over 20 years in sports broadcasting. Goren continues his long-standing career and lasting legacy through his role as the Executive Director of the National Sports Media Association, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization committed to helping students and young professionals in their path to success while perpetuating excellence in the industry. In addition to his work with NSMA, Goren has also taught classes in sports media and broadcasting at both Wake Forest University and High Point University.
In line with the mission of the organization, NSMA brings on a number of interns throughout the year who have an interest in learning more about the industry. John David Kinney, summer intern and student at Arizona State University, shared about his experience and what he has gained in his time spent with NSMA. “The best part about this experience is the networking. I’ve had the opportunity to interview people in the industry and really connect and get to know them.” When discussing his future, Kinney has hopes of following in Goren’s footsteps in reporting, play-by-play, and videography. Kinney is one of many that have found their footing in sports media due to their time spent with NSMA. Last week, they hosted their 64th Annual Awards Banquet in Greensboro. Each year, NSMA hosts guests from across the country to celebrate and recognize outstanding members in the sports media community. Around three dozen students volunteered for the event allowing them the opportunity to network with other professionals.
Goren’s commitment doesn’t stop at his work with NSMA. He serves on the board for a number of local organizations, civic clubs, and nonprofits that all work in service to the community. When asked about what he enjoys most about his work, Goren responded, “I genuinely enjoy helping people. I’m able to honor excellence in all areas and segments of the community which is the biggest reward.” NSMA events are open to the public for anyone who is interested in meeting the people that tell the stories behind America’s sports.
